Today Viki and I are joined by kymlee.
You can find the feed for the podcast over here, or if you prefer, you can listen to the audio directly in an embedded player right here(once it shows up), as well as on thevinecast.com. There is even a new "subscribe by email" option from the feed page for those that don't use a podcatcher or rss feed reader but want to be kept up to date. And for you itunes users, of course you can use that too.
Here's just some of what was discussed in the 52 minutes of Vinecast fun...
If you have any suggestions, questions, etc......send them right on over to me at brad@thevinecast.com, and if you have a particular Viner you'd like to hear on the Vinecast (or you'd like to be on the panel yourself), let us know and we'll do our best to make it happen...especially now that I can easily call people on a real phone and take calls...it's easier than ever to be part of the Vinecast!
On a semi related note, if anyone is interested in helping out by creating a logo, or some intro/outro music for the Vinecast....drop me a line and we can work something out.
Finally! I kept looking for this to show up on my watchlist. Then I realized that my boss probably wouldn't be too pleased with me listening to this at work. So it's good I found it after work and all...
Off to listen.
On a semi related note, if anyone is interested in helping out by creating a logo, or some intro/outro music for the Vinecast....drop me a line and we can work something out.
What do you have in mind for intro/outro music?
The Conspiracy continues surrounding this image. Viki drops some vague hints and I threaten to blow the whistle soon.
Yeah, and David McGirr fleshed out the details for us now. You could have blabbed on and on about it, pushed the hype and whatnot.
Hey hey hey.. Don't skive off on the music part. What do you have in mind? I might be able to whip up a candidate by the next 'Cast, if it's something I can do.
Okay. If you get any ideas or anything, pop me an e-mail. And if you decide that some kind of guitar lick is what you want... I'm your guy. Orchestration or the like I can't do though...
I think a zippy version of the typical evening news music would be cool!
Orchestration or the like I can't do though...
Orchestration? We don't need no steenkin' orchestration! We have Garage Band!
And that's exactly what I'd be using. You win.
I figure I'll just play around on the axe for awhile, play around with the Musical Typing keyboard for awhile, see what I can come up with.
It's all you, Steve. Looking forward to hearing what you come up with.
Music update:
I'm pretty happy with what I've got written up. For the intro it's like a rock guitar reinvention of the evening news (at Viki's behest). I watched a YouTube clip of John Williams and a symphony recording NBC's music, and took a nod from that, plus an ABC-style fanfare intro. As for outro music, it's basically just a cool-sounding little short song. I played the beginning and end of this week's 'Cast over them and I feel like they fit okay... So here's my new plan.
I'ma change my strings. Haven't done that in a very long time, and boy does it need it. Then I'll lay down official recordings tonight/tomorrow, clean things up in Audacity, and hopefully have them e-mailed your way on Monday. That way, if you realize something doesn't work or you have a brilliant idea, there's still time to change things.
Bueno?
Hi Brad, I haven't listened yet, but plan to. It would be nice if you could tell us how long the recording is so we can set aside a block of time to listen.
Thanks
Thanks Brad.
OK Vinecast, but me 2 cents worth is that the previous were better, but, when news is slow,
news comment is slow.
The thing about the McCann affair is, for me, shocking. Must have been some truly nasty stuff there. Being a noob, I still am quite sensitive to the dreaded suspension thing. Maybe you folks (Brad/Vikki/invited guest...) can shed some light on it.
Lollapalooza coming up, hope E & V get some tasty stuff on the Vinecast.
The Road Trip, same thing but with a bunch reporting from truck stops and Viner safehouses.
Looks like there's much to be expected next time the dynamic duo show up!
I can put skype on my phone, so I'm thinking about the possibility of having Brad record some "live" reports from Eric and I during Lolla. Of course, I haven't broached that subject with him yet. Brad...consider the subject broached. ;)
I agree that it was a bit slowish. I wasn't as prepared as I have been for the previous 'casts, and now I've learned my lesson on that front. It really is a bit of a work in progress, and I do appreciate y'all listening and offering suggestions and thoughts.
As far as Dennis McCann's suspension goes, I'm not going to comment on it at the moment, mostly because I don't have complete information, and I think that it should come from Dennis if at all.
Stop poking me with the Lolla stick V!. Seriously, I am really jealous. Press badges. Can I sell my soul? WTF.
Well, when a Viner with a RAV gets suspended, I think its news for Vinecast.
Yeah, I heard the Dennis thing and was like WTF? I guess I wasn't paying attention much to Newsvine over the weekend while I was working at Netroots Nation.
dying to hear how that went, spiffie. Wanna be a guest next week?

...Eh?
Huh?
Wouldn't it be fun to call Brad from Lolla with some live reports that he can record? Was I supposed to ask you first? :p
Dammit Eric, get with the program. It would be fun for you to broadcast while V is on line for the ladies rooms, er cubicles, er shoot...
You're even in luck. I happened to recently install Skype.
Honestly, the best thing about having press passes is that there are "private" portapotties in the press area. That and the entrance to which one does not have to wait in line. And the chairs in the shade. And the free water and snacks. And the wifi access. And the volunteers whose job it is to keep an eye on my laptop while I go have a beer and dance.
My people have been alerted to answer the telephone…for once. Good help is hard to find these days!
Wouldn't it be fun to call Brad from Lolla with some live reports that he can record?
Heh, maybe you can't tell from the finished products, but before I consult my notes and condense things down my show reviews are basically contradictory, half drunken gibberish.
I hate you V. Chairs in the shade? Set aside Portapotties? Free water and snacks?
Wi;fi and fawning gofers...
I am scum...
Ok, first "live" reports from Lolla (ugh I just got a horrible Jane's Addiction flashback) would be great, though I imagine they'd have to be brief to be included in the podcast? Then again, in their uncut forms they can be included in actual articles.
Second, I was shocked to hear about Dennis. I agree that it would be best to hear from him, but still.
Three, would anyone be willing to write up an article on Skype. I'm pretty tech savy, but a tutorial explaining that program would maybe encourage more viners to podcast. Anyway, it's just a suggestion. ;-)
maybe you can't tell from the finished products
Well we certainly work hard to keep up the illusion. ;-)
No, Eric, I can't tell from the finished products.
Because when I go to shows, I bring my notebook, and then I'm left with eight hundred pages of gibberish, and I just give up, at the very least I write "That was a great show" and move on.
I'm going to have to stay sober during the day this year, so that we can really hit those afterparty things we're getting invited to, and make some sense out of them in the morning before we head back into the madness.
I hope you're prepared. ;)
I second yasmin.
Awww V, yes you can have fun...after you and E give us the news...
Better late than never was coined for me. I do enjoy hearing the vinecast though and wouldn't have known about Dennis if it were not for you all mentioning it. Wow, that bites and without even seeing what happened it's impossible to say much more than how awful it is that we have users who come to spam and slander and almost invite viners to go over the line.
Dennis takes a lot of time and energy to try to defend some of the worst predjudice and while his snark skills are surely not appreciated by everyone he is one of the most patient users in most cases. It's another sign of the times that isn't making us smarter.
That brings me to my next point, there's no such thing as too much complaining about MSNBC in my book. While this was and is being sold to viners as having some upside, the only benefits that seem to be here are for the network. As one of the older users who always came here to get smarter and have fund it is not having any positive effect on my time on the vine. The MSNBC content is drowning out the community and overall it's like dumping enough fertilizer on our sweet fennel to nearly kill it.
Thanks again for doing this and if ever viki and kim are looking for side work those laughs of yours are good enough to be on a sound track. Have a great week and let's hope we all survive here. :~)
Thanks Pamela. I was just listening to the Vinecast thinking, "Am I really that giggly?" I guess I'm easily amused. :)
In fairness Viki does have a contagious laugh and listening makes me want to join you all!!
We did do a lot of laughing!
Thoughts on this so far
re: fast food - read Fast Food Nation. You won't regret it.
re: apes. I'm interviewing a graphic novelist-turned-novelist and the same day I read a news story about apes getting rights I got to a part in his fiction book about the undead being presumed alive until proven dead and thus getting legal rights... and I had to wonder which story made more sense. And of course asked him for a comment and....
Whoa - wait? Did I hear my name (for the record I noticed stumbling over my last name. Traditionally it's pronounced butt-key but my genuis sister wondered why we ask for verbal abuse when the default is for people to pronounce it in a more polite way so as of my nieces we're going for bought-key.
Anyway it made me think of the ape issue and how much potential great ethical issues and bellygazing can occur so it's cool that you, Brad, raised the issue.
If someone starts said debate drop me a line.
I think if you mention the zodiac killer while tapping your heels together he'll come join newsvine, probably through a MSNBC seed.
I'm trying to write LESS, not more.
No, seriously....
ok, I'll wait...
Still laughing?
Ok, right now I've been averaging one fresh author or music interview (or viner) a day on weekdays and am booked through next monday.
Any more than that and it seems more like work and lessens the odds it'll be read.
I had a better idea - I just revived the discussion, the seed you linked to at the top of the story.
I think if you mention the zodiac killer while tapping your heels together he'll come join newsvine, probably through a MSNBC seed.
Heh. What's he gonna encrypt? BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA R TEH SUXXOR
?
read Fast Food Nation. You won't regret it.
Hey Scott, how saying watch Roundup Ready Nation? Where's my home turf advantage? :~)
Pamela:
Sorry, how's this:
get the value meal full of nutrition information goodness, with the book Fast Food Nation, the movie Round Up nation and some alcohol to help you deal with how depressed all the information will make you?
re: msnbc discussion - is it time to separate seeds from articles for top of the vine so that, say, winsome's article doesn't have to compete with a 3 paragraph seed from msnbc.
MSNBC is balkanizing newsvine forcing divisions and rancor into the "boycott msnbc seeds" and such. Good discussion on this over at Kymlee's article
