Vinecast Returns....finally.

After over a year of being gone, the Vinecast is BACK. It'll will be running weekly on Wednesdays. Here's the first brand-spanking new episode.....show notes below....

Today, me and Viki are joined by Celestina and Orlando Dozier to discuss the return of the Vinecast, and all manner of random things.

You can find the feed for the podcast over here, and the show notes each week (as well as an embedded player for the podcast) will be posted here on Newsvine on the Vinecast group(and others) and on www.thevinecast.com.

Just some of the things discussed in the nearly 1.5 hours of Vinetastic conversation...

  • Bitch session and quick intro of panelists
  • The Vinecast returns!
  • Nomic - Lawmaking, the game?
  • Oil prices - Uh...they're high.
  • Social programs, is the government competent enough to run them?
  • Why don't we know what our taxes are paying for?
  • Should the US be run like a business?
  • Why you should be peeing around your veggies, and the quest to grow your own food.
  • The evolution of the Gay Pride Parade
  • Sex and drugs - Just say maybe.
  • Is cocaine the drug of choice for newsvine trolls?
  • Newsvine user base growing too fast?
  • Celestina doesn't want your hate-mail, but I do.

We wandered from topic to topic and strayed out in random directions a bit, but it was great fun...if slightly more chaotic then maybe it could have been. There is a small amount of echo through some of the audio (I'll be prodding people about proper mic use and settings later!), but it went pretty well really.

What do you think, do we need more focus? More cow bell? What? If you have any suggestions, questions, fan-mail, hate-mail, letter bombs, etc......send them right on over to me at brad@thevinecast.com. or comment below. We'd love to hear from you.

Looks like the embedded player is showing now, woohoo. Had to break the podcast into 2 parts due to file size limits, but now you don't even have to leave this page to listen. Fun times!

I'm listening to it now. Unfortunately I don't have all that much time today, but I'll finish it later. Maybe you could break them up is shorter sets in the future? That way if we don't have that long we can listen a little bit at a time.

I really sounds good!

And yeah, we ran kinda long...but being the first time back there was just so much to discuss and we kept side tracking into deep discussions....couldn't bear to cut it off. In the future it'll be shorter (or I'll chop it into smaller pieces at least).

Hi Brad, and everyone, I have just finished listening to the complete Vinecast, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I found it very entertaining, and you raised some good issues, particularly the number of new Vine Members who, do not seem to fully understand the concept behind the site.

As Robert has posted and mentioned his Podcast here, I just want to say that I have taken a leaf out of his book, and also started my own Podcast shows, based around my Newsvine Column.

If you would like a viewpoint from across the Pond, then please, do consider me as a possible future Vinecaster Panel Member.

I do not, currently, have Skype installed on my system, but that can quickly be re-installed.

Keep up the good work, it was great listening to all of you, and I am really looking forward to the next Vinecast.

Sandie, I'm sure we could get ya on as a panelist at some point in the near future. Always nice to get different perspectives on things. drop me a line at brad@thevinecast.com sometime with your skype info (once you reinstall and such), and we can work out a good time. We are hoping to keep a fairly set recording schedule (within a bit of flexibility of course), on Tuesdays nights (sometimes maybe Monday). Let me know when a good time for you would be and I'm sure we can make it happen. :)

Well, I know the guys at the Entertainment Gateway have sure gotten publicity. I'm also pretty happy that the staff is keeping the MSNBC seeds off the front page.

I really don't think we can blame MSNBC for the community's lack of tightness. It happened around that time, but I believe it was a little before. MSNBC didn't help, of course.

By the way, I heard you guys talking about how you couldn't even remember the last Vinecast. I can. I was on it. Believe it or not, that was back when Zaki returned in January (2007?). But the show before that (the first and last "real" Vinecast) was the one right after Groups came out and everyone was griping about how they did and didn't like it. :-P

Just look at England's NHS; people can't even get their teeth pulled. I was engaged to an Englishman who got rushed to the hospital four times a year because his asthma was so bad. He never saw an asthma specialist, and he never got his inhalers adjusted (the medication didn't help much anyway but at least it was cheap to produce). While he was in the states he had to visit a doctor and he said it was the easiest thing ever, they took his travel health insurance and the doctor was actually nice to him and everything went smooth. When he tried my inhaler (he was having an asthma attack) the medication actually worked for him. He told me the rich people who can afford private health care get pushed to the front of donor lines. People wait forever for their surgeries (no matter how life threatening) and the government does what it can to reduce costs. Do we really want to subject our people to that?

we need some sort of healthcare reform and a way to get healthcare assistance to those without healthcare.

The NHS in the U.K. is exactly Sixty Years old this week. It does work, it saved my life about thirty years ago, and gave me a very badly needed operation as well, (gender re-assingnment surgery), so I cannot complain too much about it.

It is, however, difficult to find a Dentist that accepts NHS paitents these days, as most of them prefer Private Practice. (Well, they would, wouldn't they? More money in it for them.

It's pretty, but what I'd like is a line-by-line itemization of where my money is going, like I get for my property taxes.

Of course, if the government couldn't pull that off, why would I expect them to be able to pull of nationalized health care? ;)

One suggestion would be to move to a third party platform like Talkshoe or BlogTalkRadio. That way, people can call in and stuff. I know Talkshoe works with SIP (a free calling program) and I'm pretty sure BTR does as well. I think both also offer their own VoIP clients.

Might switch to something like talkshoe at some point if their is interest in doing live shows where people can chat and call in and such. talkshoe is pretty cool..though it can reduce the quality of the recording quite a bit sometimes. it's a tradeoff really, between quality and interactivity.

If someone really wants to call in though, they can have my skypeIN number and I'll tell them when to call :P

I would soooo love to call in during a show. Still trying to get the remaining necessary elements together for this ol' clunker's replacement. Skype crashes this dinosaur virtually without fail every time when running both audio and cam. Haven't tried audio only, though.

Can someone please tell me if there's any appreciable difference in quality between using a headset and phone style?

Can someone please tell me if there's any appreciable difference in quality between using a headset and phone style?

Typically a headset will have better noise canceling for the mic then a phone-like handset would have..but really it depends on the quality of the headset too, I promise you a $400 headset will sound a hell of a lot better then a phone-like handset....but a $20-40 one...probably not so much :P

You'll catch a lot more listeners by keeping the 'cast to under 30 minutes whenever possible. I won't post the link (out of courtesy) but I have a mirror site that podcasts the most popular articles from my column.

During these podcasts you do, don't forget to mention at least someone's column at NV. Over at the Straight Talk podcast, I usually say something like:

'...and if you'd like to view any of the articles we broadcast on this show, just drop by the Straight Talk column at (give your column address at NV here).

You pick up a lot of back and forth traffic this way.

Ok hopefully this works, stupid Newsvine wouldn't let me comment earlier today or last night. I had a chance to listen to half of the vinecast and found myself trying to jump into the conversation. It was funny how Celestina sounded like the counter culture professor, Viki sounded like the cynical city girl, and Orlando sounded like the pragmatist. The conversation did indeed sound like a Vinemeet.

What would be really cool is if you could get advertisers and the Vinecast blew up like Perez Hilton. A community of people who have a weekly (or however regularly) podcast for people to tune into. I think most of us are more interesting and smarter than half of the pundits and so-called pop culture gurus. What would you need but a few good advertisers and a little exposure - and the people will come with the exposure.

Brad hit me up and let me know how I can get involved.

SHEdit: I could totally see this having the feel of a Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! style show. Not that it's a game show, just that everyone riffs off each other and it gets hilarious, with a basis in something that happened recently.

I don't necessarily see strictly a "style show" coming from call-ins or scheduled guests. Granted, with the camaraderie inherent with any community comprised of a strong, established base a certain degree of silliness is par for the course.

It's no secret that NV has a wonderfully diverse membership, many of whom are well versed on a variety of fascinating subjects. I'm sure I'm not the only person who can easily list at least a half dozen 'Viners that would probably make terrific guests.

Frankly, it's been years since I've been active anywhere online and felt such a sense of respect and admiration for both individuals and a community as a whole. Newsvine, despite its current growing pains, is a remarkable entity.

After I read that comment, I heard the scary, shark-is-coming music from Jaws in my head.

Looks like there may be a nice little opening on the panel for tonight's recording if anyone is interested in participating. Let me know at brad@thevinecast.com. First come first serve I suppose, unless I can think of a better way to decide if more than one person wants in tonight :D

If I wasn't in such an evil mood today I would consider it. I would probably end up ranting about how everybody on Newsvine thinks they're automatically smarter then everybody else because they got a degree back in 1960 something.

Just upload soon. I haven't gotten time to listen yet, but I have planned some tonight and I'm looking forward to it.

That's not true.....well, the second bit anyway, I'm OBVIOUSLY smarter than everyone else.

Really though, don't be a grumpy gus! You'll have to come on sometime, or I'll just have to keep bugging you about it :P

Andimia, I've had a very stressful day and I'll likely be taking it out on Vinecast listeners. If you're still interested, please join us. There's nothing wrong with a good bitchfest.

Steve--Skype is free to download, isn't it? Plus, I've got $10 in my skype account that I bought so I could call Dave McGirr and never was able to. I could call your phone if you like.

Of course, you've got to reply soon. Shoot me an email.

Also, just thought this needed a mention, this episode hit 100 downloads sometime yesterday. Not bad for the first one of the revived Vinecast (the second has reached over 50 downloads in half the time it took the first one...a good sign). It's going gloriously for it's first month back. Considering that only includes people getting it from the feed or thevinecast.com, and not anyone who used the player embedded here on the article(since I don't have those stats), that's pretty damn good I'd say.

Awww, geez! Don't sell out to any corporate media entity, please! Once that happens TPBT get wild-ass notions of thinking they can dictate every facet before the ink is even dry on the contract. The Vinecast, as it operates now, would surely cease to remain that which the Newsvine community deems it should be.

    Screw the shills! Autonomy rules!
